Alex Higgins was an infamous character despite his many talents. His volatile temperament and frequent arguments made Higgins polarizing. His uninhibited lifestyle was noticed by the national press. He wasn't considered a "right kind"

Steve James defeated Alex Higgins in the first round of the 1990 World Snooker Championship. He defeated Ray Reardon in the semi-final to win the final. Higgins became the first player to qualify for four consecutive finals. However, the following season, he lost to Jimmy White in the semi-final and Davy Ferguson in the final.

Alex Higgins suffered from long-term alcoholism and smoking problems throughout his career. In 1998, Higgins was also diagnosed in his throat with cancer. He played snooker for many years and was the first Irish player ever to win the World Title in 2006.

During his career, Higgins had numerous vices, including alcohol, cocaine and gambling. Holly Haise, his ex-girlfriend, stabbed Higgins three times in the arm. His life was also complicated by a long battle with throat cancer. He died in 2010, at the age 61. His funeral was at St Anne's Cathedral in Belfast.
